Real Money Earning Games in India: What Happened in 2026

The 30-second answer

If you came here looking for the best app to earn real money playing games in India, the honest answer is that there is no longer one to recommend.

Online money games have been prohibited across India since 1 May 2026 under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. The ban covers any online game where you pay a fee or deposit money expecting a return — skill-based games are not exempt, which is why rummy, poker and fantasy cricket all fall inside it. Every major Indian operator suspended cash formats in late August 2025, days after the Act passed.

Two things follow, and they are the reason this page still exists:

1. If you had a balance when the music stopped, it is probably still recoverable. The ban stopped deposits and cash play; it did not seize existing wallets. Most operators kept withdrawals open.
2. Any app still promising you cash earnings is operating illegally. These are mostly offshore clones, and they are now the single largest source of complaints in India’s cyber-crime system.

Where each app ended up

All eleven stopped cash play within days of Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. What differs is how each one wound down, and that determines how you get paid.

How to read the status column. “Cash discontinued” is the good case: the company is solvent, the app still opens, and a withdrawal is routine. “Wound down” (RummyCulture) means the product is closing for good — your money is no less safe, but the clock is shorter. “ED freeze” (WinZO) is the hard case, where funds may sit behind a court-ordered freeze under the money-laundering law and the route shifts from app support to legal escalation.

Getting your balance out

The general sequence, which the per-app pages above expand on:

1. Complete KYC first. This is the most common blocker by far. Several operators now show a standing notice asking users to finish verification before a withdrawal can clear. If your PAN name and bank name do not match exactly, fix that before requesting anything — see Aadhaar name mismatch at withdrawal.
2. Request the full balance in one go where the app allows it, rather than in instalments. Support queues are thinning and each request is a separate ticket.
3. Expect TDS. Section 194BA takes 30% of net winnings — withdrawals minus deposits across the financial year. Over-deduction is common and refundable when you file: see claiming a gaming TDS refund.
4. If it stalls, escalate in order — the platform’s grievance officer, then the National Consumer Helpline (1915), then the RBI Ombudsman if the failure is on the bank or payment-rail side. How to complain about an RMG app has the time limits for each step.

There is no statutory deadline. A 180-day refund window appeared in the October 2025 draft rules and was removed before the final Rules 2026 were notified. Lawyers described the deletion as a material dilution of consumer safeguards around stranded funds. You cannot tell an operator that the law owes you your money by a certain date — your leverage is the company’s own published wind-down promise, consumer protection law, and the payment-rail rules once money is actually in transit. In practice this makes acting early more important, not less.

Apps still advertising cash earnings

The legal operators left a vacuum, and it filled quickly. If an app is currently promising real cash earnings to users in India, it is not licensed — no such licence exists — and it is almost certainly offshore.

What this costs you in practice: no domestic grievance route, no RBI Ombudsman jurisdiction, no operator to serve notice on, and payment rails that are often already flagged. Money that goes in usually does not come back.

The recurring patterns to recognise:

• Promises of guaranteed daily income, or referral earnings that dwarf game winnings
• Deposits via personal UPI IDs or frequently rotating payee names rather than a registered merchant account
• No PAN or KYC requirement at deposit, which no compliant operator could offer
• Withdrawals that require a further “tax”, “processing” or “unlock” payment — always a scam, with no exceptions
• Distribution via APK download or Telegram rather than an app store

What is still legal to play

PROGA drew its line at the stake, not the skill. Two categories stayed open:

• Esports — competitive video gaming organised as sport. The Act does not merely permit it, it actively promotes it, and it is the category the government pointed to as the legitimate future of Indian gaming. Prize money in a recognised esports competition is not a prohibited money game.
• Online social games — anything played for entertainment or skill development without a money stake. Free-to-play fantasy contests with no entry fee sit here, which is why several operators pivoted to them rather than shutting down entirely.

What neither of these will do is replace a side income. Any page suggesting you can reliably earn a living from games in India in 2026 is either describing an illegal offshore product or is out of date.

We do not know, and nobody honestly does. Several operators have challenged the Act, led by Head Digital Works in the Karnataka High Court. Litigation is unresolved and has not restored cash play. Treat any site claiming a confirmed return date as unreliable.
